Client: Warming Huts
Location: Toronto, Canada
The deck chair is synonymous with the seaside. This classic piece of furniture has been in use since the 1860’s. As a design item it provokes a strong sense of nostalgia reminding us of time spent playing and relaxing on the beach.
In considering the Warming Huts competition theme of “catalyst” we were inspired to explore an architectural approach which reflects the extreme changes in weather which takes place on the Toronto beaches.
The deck chair is a comfortable piece of furniture but it also has the added qualities of being lightweight, fold-able, strong and is able to act as a wind guard. Our scheme explores the potential for a structure which can protect from the elements in the winter but can then be de-constructed and used as a means of enjoying the beach in the summer.
