If we continue adding carbon to the atmosphere, we’ll very likely create an ice-free planet, with an average temperature of perhaps 27 degrees celcius instead of the current 14. This proposal is designed for an earth where all ice has melted and drained into the sea, raising it 216 feet and creating new shorelines for our continents and inland seas. A combination of less land to build on and an increasing population in certain locations means that a new architecture needs to emerge, one which is designed around inhabitation on water.
Our proposal raises all buildings away from the sea, placing them on columns which would house escalators taking you up to the sky. Buildings are arranged to create topographies reminiscent of those on land. A network of transportation and services sits close to sea level.
The city will be powered using wind and solar energy, in addition the wind is harnessed to create a new kinetic city model where elements that are normally in a fixed location freely orbit in space. Constant movement means that architectural relationships are always altering and therefor the experience of the city is never the same from day to day. We propose to develop aerodynamic versions of traditional archetypes which exist in the city and position them on long crane like walkways which will rotate through the use of a wind powered sails.
